Red Stag

Red Deer (including Stags) have become an iconic species in New Zealand, deeply intertwined with the country’s hunting culture and outdoor traditions. Originally introduced in the mid-19th century by European settlers, red deer were released across the country as a prized game species, with early imports coming from Scotland and England.

Thriving in New Zealand’s diverse and fertile landscapes, these majestic animals quickly established themselves in the wild, particularly in the South Island’s mountainous regions. Over time, red deer grew to symbolize adventure and challenge for hunters, solidifying their place as one of New Zealand’s most sought-after trophy species and a cornerstone of the country’s sporting heritage. New Zealand is home to all the World Record Red Stags taken for many recent years.
